Doug Brown

Doug Brown is an experienced photographer, writer, reporter, illustrator, designer, and justice-driven communications professional. After five years working in Portland, Oregon, Doug moved back to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to be closer to his family in late 2021.

He was most recently a communications staffer for the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon (2018-2021), news reporter for the Portland Mercury (2016-2018), and staff writer for Cleveland Scene magazine (2013). He has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Hiram College and a master’s degree in journalism from Kent State University.

His photographs have been have been published throughout the world by the Associated Press, Washington Post, the New York Times, the Intercept, CNN, Buzzfeed News, the Guardian, CNN, BBC, Univision, the the American Civil Liberties Union, Portland Mercury, Willamette Week, Oregon Public Broadcasting, the Oregonian, and in many more local and international news outlets.

As a news reporter for the Portland Mercury and independent photographer in the years before the January 6, 2021, insurrection in Washington DC, he extensively documented the formation and rise of far-right groups like the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters, the Oath Keepers and their frequently-cozy relationships with law enforcement. He documented the emergence of the anti-fascists activists known as “antifa.” And, notably, he was on the front line of the protests in Portland following George Floyd’s murder in 2020, documenting the uprising and the violent suppression of protests by local law enforcement and federal agents. Doug Brown is a plaintiff in the American Civil Liberties Union’s landmark First Amendment lawsuit against the Portland Police Bureau and US Department of Homeland Security for targeting and brutalizing press and legal observers.
